Blog

13th March 2021

Well this blog has been deeply neglected! Life has taken over. This last year Covid-19 has struck and along with it the rollercoaster of emotions . I have thankfully been one of the lucky ones as have had some money coming in through furlough. Creativity speaking over this last year it has been hard as everyone knows, fluctuating between zero motivation and surges of enthusiasm for all this new found time. Added into the mix the worry about family and friends, it has been a funny mix. Creative inspiration is a delicate beast.  You long for time and then when you have the time, unless you have a deadline sometimes you find every distraction under the sun not to be creative.

This the third lockdown I have tried to utilise the time as much as possible. I have joined United Art's Space Hub a artistic community and started on their 7 keys course. I really wanted something to focus me in these strange times and realising that while I was working six days a week I had been very close to burning out! A part of me wants to be in more control of my time and future than being employed although in reality I am not sure I would be able to substitute my earnings with my art. Not ruling out the possibility though! It has been lovely to be in a community of artists too and feel you can ask for help or support. Aiming to try for a year and see if it leads anywhere.  My motivation of working all hours was to save for a possible deposit for a house and I am still hoping this can be achieved.

Its been a little while since I wrote anything. I have been really concentrating on horses the last few years, working six days a week in three different place. It has been fabulous and I have learnt so much but it has left me very little time to make things other than for family and friends. I decided to free up a little bit of time and spend some of that energy  on my own creative ventures. This feels important and I am keeping open with all of my ventures to see if anything comes of it.

I have started an oil commission of a lovlely cob . This one will not be gifted for a while so the finished result will not be displayed until the summer. Working with oil paints are fantastic as it is much more forgiving than that of watercolour for instance. I really like to take my time with oils in order to build up the textures and discover where the brush strokes can inhance the animal's coat. You can also be a bit more experimental as well, as you can easily paint over it later if it doesn't work.

Yesterday I completed a pointer/beagle cross sketch which  I am really pleased with, I have started using water soluble pencils which are a really lovely medium to work with. They can be used obviously like a pencil so the benefit of being able to rub out unwanted lines or to create highlights. However, they are also like watercolour paints and with the addition of a little water  and a brush you can soften the edges or create shadows.
